By joining Unite, you become part of something bigger — the trade union movement represents the biggest social movement in the country with Unite the strongest union in the finance sector.

Unite has an extraordinary reach. Our reps negotiate pay, consult on business changes and ensure that our members’ voices are part of the decision making process when changes are considered by the bank. Our officials lobby government, protect workers’ rights and back significant social and employment policy changes. Unite represents over 1.2 million members in every corner of the country and across 19 different sectors.

Our specially trained workplace reps offer advice when you need it and representing members like you when things go wrong. We advocate for positive workplace changes and ensure workers are at the centre of all business decisions.

Our safety reps help ensure your workplaces are safe by conducting inspections and advice workers on their rights under health and safety legislation. It is a fact that unionised workplaces have fewer accidents, injuries and fatalities. We achieve this by holding the bank to account via a national safety committee and independently investigating near misses and accidents. We also protect workers from detriment after raising safety concerns which helps ensure that workers are comfortable raising issues.

Our population of equalities reps are subject matter experts on the Equality Act 2010. We help protect your rights, secure adjustments and protect members from discrimination in the workplace. When things go wrong we can represent members raising complaints of harassment, discrimination, victimisation and can advise on your specific circumstances. We also ensure that changes to policies, restructures and recruitment processes are free from direct and indirect discrimination.

Our learning reps are specialists in training and development. They work with the bank, Unite and other providers to identify opportunities for training and development of Unite members. They have detailed knowledge of a wealth of courses on offer. Unite learning reps have secured funding for qualifications, arranged language courses, helped members gain professional qualifications, facilitated career changes and helped members reach their full potential.

Unite at NatWest put forward one of the first group of reps trained in our newest discipline – environmental reps. We hold the bank to account on their environmental performance and work to secure a just green transition. We also practice what we preach – for example our reps meet remotely whenever possible, use public transport to travel to in-person meetings, and this website is hosted by Krystal who use only green energy to power their data centres.

Reps from each region are elected to the National Company Committee (NCC). The committee helps organise our campaigns, manage the strategic direction of Unite at NatWest, undertake pay negotiations and consult with the bank on business changes and redundancies.

Most importantly, Unite the Union empowers you, our members. Every campaign starts with members raising an issue. And every win is not Unite taking an issue on your behalf, it is working with you to organise, leverage and fight for what’s right.

Unlike the bank’s Employee Led Networks, which are controlled by management and have executive ‘sponsors,’ Unite the Union is truly independent. Our reps are elected by Unite members in NatWest with management having no input. Upon election, our reps go through rigorous training and receive professional qualifications followed by in-house mentoring with experienced reps before being signed off to advise members. Our independence also means that we can, and do, campaign on the issues that are important to our members. We are able to criticise the bank when it is warranted, organise around issues, leverage publicity, take legal action, ballot for industrial action and use our network of thousands of reps across the country to win on the issues that matter to you.

As a new member, you are part of something truly powerful.

All Unite members are expected to abide by the Unite Rulebook. These rules govern how the union is run and set expectations for members and reps, outline the objects of the union and covers how we handle complaints.

In a nutshell, we expect you to act with honesty and integrity, to provide Unite only with accurate and honest information, and not to act in any way that is detrimental to, or at odds with, Unite’s aims and policies or the wider trade union movement.

We encourage you to participate actively with your union. Being a member of a trade union should never be a spectator sport. Take part by supporting campaigns in NatWest, completing our surveys and ballots, get to know your local reps, come to your local branch meetings and raise issues with your union. Every single campaign starts with a member coming to us with something that does feel right and every single campaign is won by members taking action together as a collective – this is the heart and soul of what being a member of a trade union is about.

We ask you to promote the benefits of being part of Unite at NatWest and to encourage workers around you to join. If every one of us recruits just one new member each today, our strength tomorrow will double. It is collective strength and numbers that allow us to work together to protect and improve our terms and conditions, win real pay rises and have rewarding, longterm jobs.

We’ll be there whenever you need us. If you email our NatWest member mailbox or use the contact form on this site, you’ll hear back from us by the next working day, although we aim to reply on the same day.

We will fight hard to improve and protect the pay, conditions and prospects of all of our members. Our values and campaigns will be driven by the needs and views of our members.

Our reps will be professional, approachable and friendly. They may not always tell you what you want to hear, but they will use their training and experience to give you the right advice at the right time.
